Learning new skills
For me, a normal day at Hutchinson is about getting better at what I do, learning new skills, and improving my knowledge in various aspects of engineering. I’ve always wanted to be in engineering because it’s a tradition in my family.
The most important skills I’ve learned so far include fully understanding how to operate CNC machinery to achieve very precise tolerances. However, I believe the most valuable skill I’ve developed is effective communication and teamwork.
There’s no typical day
I work on the HAAS lathe and the VF9 drilling centre making parts to very tight tolerances for a range of different assemblies. I’ve recently completed work on the Granada Vineyard project, producing specialised crane components.
Now, I’m focused on creating parts for the Dogger Bank C project and EWT components used in wind turbines, as well as drilling telecom base plates. What I enjoy most is the variety – no two days are the same, which really keeps my work engaging.
The best part
What I enjoy most about my role at Hutchinson is learning things I never thought I could and meeting all sorts of new people. College is great too; my tutors are really supportive and help me get through my NVQ level 3 in Machining. Once that’s done, I plan to pursue my HNC and maybe even an HND after that.
